Treasurer Mandel Holds Veterans Financial Literacy Workshop at Rhodes State College

LIMA – Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel’s office held its third Veterans Smart Money Choices financial literacy workshop on Tuesday at Rhodes State College in Lima as part of a statewide initiative to provide financial resources to Ohio’s veterans, service members and their families.  This free financial literacy workshop was offered in partnership with the Allen County Veterans Service Office and Rhodes State College and is part of Treasurer Mandel’s effort to help improve awareness of programs and resources available to veterans and their families.

“As an Iraq War veteran, I know that a strong support system can have a positive impact when veterans return home,” said Treasurer Mandel.  “Unfortunately, many service men and women are unaware of the programs and resources available to them to help ease their transition into civilian life.  I want to make sure that our nation’s veterans are provided with knowledge and access to resources that will help empower them to continue serving our country in their communities across Ohio.”

“Hosting today’s veterans workshop is just another way Rhodes State College is reaching out to the veteran population.  Rhodes State is focused on access and student success and this is a perfect example of how we can work with the state of Ohio to assist our veterans in accessing support to achieve success,” said Dr. Cynthia Spiers, Vice President for Student Affairs at Rhodes State College.

The Veterans Smart Money Choices Workshop is a free financial planning seminar for all of Ohio’s veterans, service members and their families.  Key topics in the series include local benefits and financial assistance, budgeting, credit and debt management, investments, and identity theft and fraud prevention.  Additional topics covered include homeownership, retirement and estate planning, and Social Security.

The event also included presentations and attendance from the U.S. Social Security Administration, Ohio Attorney General’s office, Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, and Ohio Means Jobs Office of Workforce Development, as well as many local organizations.
