Treasurer Mandel Visits Green County Career Center to Discuss Financial Literacy

XENIA – Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel visited Green County Career Center on Thursday to meet with high school students who are studying financial literacy in their economics and social studies courses.  The students utilize financial literacy software provided free to the school as part of Treasurer Mandel’s Financial EDge program.

Financial EDge was designed and launched this school year to help Ohio’s high schools meet a state financial literacy requirement that went into effect this year. Beginning with the graduating class of 2014, students must receive financial literacy training in order to graduate.

“We are honored to have Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel at the Green County Career Center,” said Dan Schroer, Superintendent of Green County Career Center. “Today we’re working with several students that are in financial literacy here at the Career Center. Many junior students were excited for the conversation that will occur between the state treasurer and these students.”

Through the Financial EDge program, Green County Career Center utilizes a suite of free online tools developed by EverFi, an educational technology firm.  Mandel toured the center and spoke with the rising seniors about the importance of understanding basic financial principles, such as making a budget and living within your means. He encouraged them to start responsible financial practices now to better prepare them for their futures.

“Understanding personal finances will make your lives much more enjoyable as adults, regardless of what you do after high school – college, the military or the job market,” said Treasurer Mandel. “Your life will be a lot less stressful and more successful when you have the financial tools you need to develop a budget, balance a checkbook and manage a mortgage. You are getting off to a great start.”
