Community Common: Local receives “Ohio Strong” award

April 8, 2015

Roy Bennett has been the evening coordinator for trade and industrial programs at the Scioto County Career Technical Center for the past eight years. Bennett’s dedication and support of skilled trades was recognized with the “Ohio Strong” Award. This prestigious award distinguishes individuals who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in their jobs, or to help train the next generation of workers.

Ohio Strong is an effort started by Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel to help recognize local workers in manufacturing and the skilled trades, and raise public awareness to encourage more people to pursue careers in these fields.

According to Treasurer Mandel, “I believe that there is a quiet crisis upon us, and in order to prosper as a country we need to encourage young Americans to pursue careers in the skilled trades. I launched the Ohio Strong initiative to help bring pride and profile to dedicated men and women across our state who works in these fields that are so vital to our economy.”

In addition Mr. Bennett also received a proclamation from Representative Terry Johnson during the same ceremony “echoing the sentiments” from the Ohio Strong group.

Bennett is a lifelong resident of Scioto County. In addition to coordinating Scioto Tech’s skilled training programs, Bennett is actively involved with Bikers’ For Christ as the Mid-West Regional Elder over six states. He and his wife Ruth are the parents of two adult children—Amy Frazier of Columbus, and Aaron Bennett of Wheelersburg.
